Department of Communications and Networking (Comnet)

The Department (Comnet) is a multi-disciplinary unit of research and higher education covering communications and networking technology, networking business and human aspects of communication and communications technology. In its area, Comnet is the largest unit in Finland. Comnet develops communications, information and teletraffic theory and conducts fundamental and applied experimental research in communications and networking technology. In shaping the Internet technology Comnet is a significant force internationally.

Human factors and business research have been embedded into a technology department because new technology is developed for people and should fit into some business model. We believe that that a wide multi-disciplinary understanding is needed already when a new communications or networking technology is still on the drawing board.

Comnet is leading the Degree Program on Communications Engineering at TKK. Comnet offers several paths for specialization grouped into two major subjects in the International Master's Program on Communications Engineering. Comnet offers several international "joint" and dual degree programs with leading European universities of Technology.

The Department was formed as a result of the merger the more than 60 year old Networking laboratory and the more than 40 year old Communications Laboratory.
